DARK MARKS: WHAT IS IT?
Dark marks are dark patches, freckles, or brown spots on the skin. These dark marks can vary in size and develop anywhere on the body. Dark marks can affect any skin tone, however it is more common on darker skin.
WHAT CAUSES DARK MARKS?
Excess melanin production is a frequent cause of dark marks. This usually occurs when the skin generates an excessive amount of melanin (the pigment that gives the skin its colour). Excessive sun exposure, pimples, hormones and shaving can all trigger melanin formation.
COMMON TYPES OF DARK MARKS?
Age spots
Age spots are small black or brown spots that show up on the skin as we get older. To alleviate some concerns, age spots on the face, backs of hands, shoulders, and forearms are quite common. However, they can make you appear older. As we age, melanin production decreases, causing age spots.
Sun spots
Sun spots are areas of skin that seem visibly brighter or darker than the surrounding skin. They vary in shape and size and are most commonly found on the face, shoulders, forearms, and hands. Chronic sun exposure causes this type of dark marks. Exposure to UV rays increases the production of melanin, resulting in dark spots and patches.
Post-acne marks
Post-acne marks occur after a pimple heals. During a break-out, the skin produces excess melanin which causes discolouration. Men get a lot of post-acne marks from their beard as a result of shaving and ingrown hairs, which is very common in men.
HOW TO REDUCE DARK MARKS
Use sunscreen daily: Include sun-protection tactics in your skincare routine. Using an SPF-protected moisturiser keeps UV radiation and pollutants at bay. This will also help to reduce dark spots and ageing.
Don’t pick blemishes: Blemishes are one of the main culprits of dark marks. Scratching and picking at a pimple could only worsen skin discolouration.
